Happy Birthday, Mam Saba Yousif-Zai!

A little garden, grown only for you.

A letter from my heart

Dear Mam Saba Yousif-Zai, on this beautiful day I wanted to give you something that could never fit inside an ordinary card or a hurried message, so I built you a small garden of light, music and flowers, and now I am trying my best to pour my heart into words. Happy Birthday, Mam. Some people walk into our lives like ordinary days, and some walk in like spring, quietly changing the colour of everything around them without ever asking for credit. You are spring to me. When I think about the people who have shaped who I am, your name rises first, softly and surely, the way the scent of a flower reaches you before you even see it. You are special to me, Mam, and I have wanted to say it properly for a very long time, so please forgive the length of this letter, because a short sentence could never carry everything I feel. I remember how you make a room feel different the moment you step into it. There is a calm in your presence, a gentle kind of strength, and a warmth that makes people feel seen instead of judged. You never made anyone feel small for not knowing something. You made us feel that not knowing was only the beginning of learning, and that every question was a door, never a weakness. That is a rare gift, and you give it so naturally that I do not think you even realise how many lives you have touched by doing it. Teachers fill notebooks with knowledge, but you filled hearts with confidence, and confidence is the thing that stays long after the lessons are forgotten. I have learned from you far more than any subject could hold. You taught me patience, by being patient with me when I was slow to understand. You taught me kindness, by speaking to everyone with the same respect, whether they were first in class or struggling to keep up. You taught me discipline, not by lecturing but by example, by arriving with a smile and a plan every day, no matter how tired you might have been. You taught me that grace and strength are not opposites, that a person can be soft in voice and unshakeable in principle. If I grow into someone worthy of respect, a part of that will always belong to you. I think of your favourite colour, purple, and it feels as if it was chosen for you by the universe itself. Purple is the colour of the sky in the quiet moment after sunset, when the day has done its work and the stars are still deciding to appear. It is the colour of dignity, of imagination, of wisdom held gently. It is the colour of lavender fields swaying in the evening breeze and of the first violets that dare to bloom while the world is still cold. That is exactly who you are: dignified without being distant, imaginative without losing your grounding, wise without ever making others feel foolish. And I know you love flowers, so I thought, what better way to honour you than to let every flower on this page bloom for you? Flowers do not shout to be noticed. They simply open, offer their beauty and their fragrance to everyone who passes by, and make the world softer just by existing. Mam, that is how you live. You open yourself to others and give without keeping count, and the world around you is gentler because of it. Every petal falling on this page is a small thank you for a kindness you may have forgotten but I never will. There are days I remember with a smile: a word of encouragement you offered when I doubted myself, a patient explanation you repeated without a sigh, a moment when you noticed that I was quiet and asked, with real concern, whether I was alright. Those small moments may have felt ordinary to you, but to me they were lanterns lit in the dark. Never underestimate the power of a small kindness; you have no idea how far the light of it can travel. When I felt like giving up, the memory of your belief in me gave me one more reason to try. When I achieved something, I wished first of all to tell you, because I knew you would be happy for me with a happiness that had no envy in it, only pride and care. This is what a true teacher is, and this is what you are. On your birthday I wish you things that are bigger than any wish I can write. I wish you a year as gentle as petals and as bright as stars. I wish that every door you open leads to a room full of laughter. I wish that the kindness you have scattered so generously returns to you doubled, in unexpected places and at unexpected hours, until you cannot help but smile. I wish you good health, because nothing precious can bloom without it. I wish you peace in your heart, the quiet kind that settles over a garden at dusk. I wish you success in everything you dream of, including the dreams you have not yet dared to say out loud. I wish you family and friends who treasure you as deeply as you deserve, and who remind you, on the hard days, how many hearts are better because you exist. And I wish that, wherever life takes you, you always remember that you were respected and cherished, truly and sincerely, by a student who will never forget you. Please know that this website is not just a gift; it is a thank you stitched together from every feeling I could not say aloud. I spent time on every flower, every colour, every glowing star and every note of the melody, because you are worth the effort and so much more. If a single moment of this made you smile, then the whole thing has done its job. You deserve a birthday filled with warmth, with flowers in every room, with music that makes your heart feel light, and with people who tell you, again and again, how important you are. You deserve to be celebrated not only today but every day, for the lives you have shaped and the hope you have planted in so many young hearts. A teacher's work is invisible in the way roots are invisible; no one sees it, yet the entire tree stands because of it. Today I want to make that invisible work visible, even if only for a moment, even if only on this screen. Thank you for every lesson, spoken and unspoken. Thank you for believing in people before they believed in themselves. Thank you for your patience, your smile, your guidance and the quiet example of how to be good in a world that does not always make it easy. Thank you for being exactly who you are. There will be many more birthdays, and I hope each one finds you surrounded by the same love you have given away so freely. I hope that on the days when you feel tired, you remember this little garden and know that it is still blooming somewhere, just for you. I hope that when you look at a purple flower, you will think of how many people carry a piece of your kindness in their hearts, and I hope that thought makes you proud. As you blow out the candle on this page, make a wish, Mam, and know that somewhere a heart is wishing it right along with you. May your life be as beautiful as the garden I have tried to grow here, may your days be as soft as purple twilight, and may your smile never lose its light. Happy Birthday, dear Mam Saba Yousif-Zai. You are special, you are remembered, and you are treasured beyond words. With all my respect, gratitude and love, your student, always.
